Electronic Muscle Stimulator (EMS)

How does an EMS Machine differ from a TENS Machine?

An EMS machine (or Electrical Muscle Stimulator) is essentially an electronic machine with the capacity to contract your muscles via an electrical current passed through your muscle. An EMS machine may be helpful in the initial phase of muscle strengthening. The electrical current may also assist pain relief, like a TENS machine, but pain relief is not it’s main purpose.

______

How does EMS (Electric Muscle Stimulation) potentially help to Strengthen your muscles:

Electronic muscle stimulation (EMS) may help you to facilitate the strengthening of weak muscles. There are several theories on how EMS may assist muscle strengthening.
One potential reason is that when you maximally contract a muscle, at best, only 30% of all your muscle fibres are in a state of contraction. The remaining 70% are dormant and awaiting recruitment when the contracting fibres fatigue. With EMS you can potentially electrically stimulate these resting muscle fibres to improve their strength. Clinically, EMS appears to be more effective when the muscles are very weak and you have difficulty performing normal anti-gravity exercises.
Another reason that EMS potentially works is via an improvement in the speed of motor unit activation. Explained simply, it takes approximately 10000 repetitions for your brain to learn how to quickly send a message to your muscles via the quickest nerve pathways.
This contraction pattern becomes your "memory engram". The more frequent your muscle is recruited the better your body becomes at finding the quickest way to recruit that muscle. EMS can potentially provide you with repeated contractions to accelerate this learning process.

Weight loss with EMS
Musgrave Park Laser clinic equipment plays a crucial part in a weight loss programme, firming and toning muscles to reshape your body while offering the benefits of a controlled full body passive workout.

During Electro-therapy treatment pads are placed on your body in precise, targeted zones. These pads transmit deep penetrating impulses into the muscles, causing them to contract and relax, simulating natural muscle movement in a controlled workout, causing firming and toning in the targeted areas. The computer varies the output speed and stimulation combination once every minute and follows a set programme until treatment is fully complete.

Treatment sessions take place in private cubicle where one of our trained EMS Therapists will set up the treatment session according to your targeted body shaping goals. The most popular, and effective treatment, takes only 30 minutes and clients receive three treatments sessions per week over a four week course. Alternative clients can opt for two 45 minute treatments per week course over a four week course. During each session there are a large number of muscles worked on simultaneously by the program, giving results without hours spent working out at the gym.

Although everyone loses weight at a different rate, clients with about 30 kilograms to lose, average a weight loss of up to 6 kilograms (or 13.2 LBS) over a four week course of treatment, when following the eating plan and attending their regular treatment sessions.

EMS treatment is beneficial to all muscle groups and can target areas like the stomach, thighs, knees, buttocks and arms.

The EMS treatment has also been shown to improve strength in conjunction with weight training. It also relieves the side effects that sportsman experience following their regular workout from intense muscle spasm and fluid retention. Muscles can become scarred, lose their elasticity and maximum force potential after traditional type exercise in a gym. Electronic muscle stimulation helps to prevent such adhesions from occurring as well as strengthening old scar tissue.

Heat Pad Treatment and Cellulite
Musgrave Park Laser Clinic teams up their EMS treatment with heat pads resulting in the improvement and reduction of visible cellulite.

Cellulite is usually recognised as a collection of waste materials and excess fluids, which are encapsulated as fat in the fibrous tissue of certain parts of the body. Sufferers know that dieting and exercise alone cannot effectively get rid of cellulite.

The heat pads that are used during the EMS Therapy session works to assist with quickly warming up the muscles during treatment, but more importantly it improves the blood circulation and lymph drainage.

Cells and organs exposed to the heat pads are activated , and blood circulation is improved as a result of the widening of these blood vessels. This leads to an increase in the metabolic rate and the mobilisation of anti-genes in the body. This absorbed heat is distributed through the body by the blood circulation. This leads to an improvement in the lymph drainage. Due to the extra blood supply, and where the cellulite is evident, the lymph drainage effect is accelerated and the toxins are flushed from the body.
